Coaching Profiles

Head Coach - Nigel Gray
Nigel has been coaching for over 8 years and in 2005 received the OAT Coach of the Year Award. He's been racing as a triathlete and duathlete for over 13 years, with a key highlight being his 3rd place finish (top Canadian) at Ironman Canada 2005 (8:42) earning him at spot at the 2005 World Championships at Ironman Hawaii. Nigel brings a wealth of coaching experience to the club. Part of that knowledge comes from having trained and raced all over the world including North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. He has experienced many highs and low in his professional racing career and is able to take his lessons learned and apply the knowledge to his athletes, in motivating and exciting them about their training and racing.

Associate Coach - Sylvie Dansereau
Sylvie was involved in sports from a very young age starting with rowing. Later in life she made the transition into multisport racing under the training supervision of Nigel Gray. She fully appreciates how a precise, carefully balanced and well thought out approach to training and racing is as essential to athletic success as dedication and hard work. Having race experience from Sprint races to Ironman and to have come from being a non-swimmer to qualify for Ironman Hawaii, helps Sylvie relate to athletes of all abilities and levels and understand the challenges of combining sport and work.

Associate Coach - Fiona Whitby
Fiona's love for sports started early in high school where she ran cross-country in the fall, Nordic skied in the winter and ran track in the spring. After graduating from Queen's University where she earned her degree in Physical Education, her triathlon racing career started and she has competed in Sprint races up to the Ironman level. Fiona has been coaching athletes since high school where she taught sailing for 10 years. In her role as Director at Athletes First she has overseen the implementation of the coaching programs, designed and instructed triathlon clinics (from beginner to advanced), written clinic manuals and led indoor cycling sessions. Key certifications held by Fiona include being a Certified Athletic Therapist, Certified Bike Fit Specialist - Serotta & FIST, and Masters Swim Coach.

Associate Coach - Deborah Moore
Deborah joined the NRG Performance Training staff in 2007. She has thirteen years of triathlon experience, including five Ironman finishes, including twice at Ironman Hawaii. Her coaching career began in 2004 when, as a senior marketing executive, she realized that the highlight of her day was helping work colleagues plan for their first 5K, or answering their questions on fitness, goal setting, training and so on. During the bike leg of Ironman Canada that year she made my decision to begin coaching triathletes and to give back to the sport that has given me so much. Since then, she has coached numerous athletes of all abilities and at all distances.

Associate Coach - Wolfgang Guembel

Wolf has been racing triathlons for the past 7 years and is a top 10 finisher at Ironman Canada and has raced in the World Championships in Hawaii. Wolf has also been running triathlon clinics around Southern Ontario for the last few seasons in association with OAT and the Subaru Triathlon Series as well as starting up the NUW Theory Triathlon Team and Mission Tri Possible, helping a group of new athletes achieve their goals of finishing their first triathlons. Wolf has a bachelor of science and math as well as a Masters in Education and brings a lot of educational knowledge to his coaching as well as practical experience.
