Chocolate Milk as a Recovery Drink

Postby Ben Lawson on Tue Nov 14, 2006 7:44 pm

I've heard that skim or 1% chocolate milk is an excellent post-workout recovery drink. It provides fluids, carbs and protein, and tastes good too. Probably poor for electrolyte replenishment though.

Of course it's also much cheaper than the commercial recovery drinks. I've been using it for a while, but don't know if it is or isn't "working".

Any opinions?

I looked at the nutrition list once to compare Boost and chocolate milk. From what I remember, the values were all pretty close but the 1% chocolate milk contained slightly more fat.

I remember reading something about that a while ago. Let me check...[searching web]...here it is...

Not sure if this helps. I think it confirms that it's at least not hogwash. As for it's effectiveness, I think like with all other supplements (weird calling milk a supplement) YMMV so you just gotta give it a try.

Interesting... I'll take that study as permission to wear a mustache, at least for every-day training.

There was a recent article on Chris Carmichael's site
http://www.trainright.com/articles.asp?uid=2751
on choc milk as recovery...basically said yes & no,then openly admitted that it's not as good as Powerbar Recovery drink, which CTS helped to formulate and plugs...

I also made the "Banada Bread Energy Bars" (Brendan Brazier) in the latest 'Get Out There'. Certainly didn't qualify as bread, but then I didn't use the popped amaranth...kind of sticky, but they harden if you freeze them. Why not just eat dates and a banana?
